The “debatable lands” between England and Scotland were for centuries plagued by battles and cross-border skirmishes. Fortified farmhouses, sturdy towers and ruined abbeys are reminders of the region’s turbulent history, but for the past century or so this has been a peaceful patch of a united kingdom, and the only evidence you’re crossing a border are the “Welcome” signs.

The Ride

Starting out from Edinburgh, this 10 day, 600 km circular route takes you through the picturesque and historical lands of the Scottish Borders before entering the county of Northumberland in Northern England with its many castles and stunning coastlines.
For the past 2000 years this beautiful and picturesque area between England and Scotland has been savagely fought over, with many fortifications still standing today including castles, abbeys and sections of the Roman Wall (Hadrian’s Wall) build by the Emperor Hadrian in the 3rd century as a defence against the invading Scots.  You will have a rest day in Alnwick home of Alnwick Castle, home of the Duke of Northumberland and whose hall was used as a setting for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films.  You will also get a chance to ride on to the island of Lindisfarne (Holy Island) the birthplace of Christianity in England
This is a fully supported ride on a bed and breakfast basis, with a local guide, mechanic and support vehicle throughout your trip.
The route is predominantly on quiet roads and cycle tracks and although the distances are not too long to allow time for sightseeing, it does contains some challenging hills that will require a reasonable level of fitness.  You will be averaging 50-90 km/day

B&B each day, full ride support vehicle with mechanic, route maps, accommodation location maps, back up rental bike in the support van tools, spare tires & tubes.

If you require bike rental we do have a good selection of well maintained bicycles in Northumberland and these are offered at a discount to all our riders.
